Energy Data Sources & Methodology
How Straitwise sources, rates and publishes — and the standards that constrain what goes on the map.
What Straitwise is
Straitwise is an independent energy-intelligence report tracking the physical movement of oil, gas and refined products and the disruptions that interrupt them. It is built for analysts, traders, journalists and policymakers who want supply-chain transparency faster than official statistics arrive.
What Straitwise is not
Straitwise is not a financial-advisory service and provides no investment advice. It does not claim ownership of primary data — everything traces to a named public source. Figures marked live come straight from the source feed; anything derived (such as risk scores) is clearly labelled as such.
Data sources
- Yahoo Finance — Brent, WTI, natural gas, gasoline and heating-oil futures
- EIA — US crude, product, SPR and natural-gas inventories
- GIE AGSI+ — European gas storage (direct read)
- aisstream.io / Digitraffic — live AIS vessel positions
- MarineTraffic — live global tanker map
- Google News — continuous national, pipeline and chokepoint monitoring
How the signals work
Price and market data are read directly from the source feeds. Country, pipeline and chokepoint “status” is derived from continuous news monitoring: recent headlines are scanned for supply-stress language and reduced to a simple critical / watch / nominal signal, with the latest headline and its source shown. These news-derived signals are indicative, not confirmed operational data.
Update schedule
Prices and news refresh multiple times a day. EIA inventories update weekly on release; GIE gas storage updates daily. Marine positions are near-live. The dashboard shows the timestamp of the most recent pull.
Editorial standards
Sources are flagged inline on every figure. Live and derived data are distinguished clearly. Where the paper market and the physical market disagree, Straitwise flags the divergence rather than pretending to resolve it.
