How Australian fuel supply works
Australia is one of the world’s largest LNG exporters but imports most of its refined transport fuel, so the crude price and Asian refining margins feed through to the pump quickly. The ACCC publishes closely-watched five-city petrol and diesel averages.
What to watch
Diesel usually moves fastest because Australia is so import-reliant; changes to fuel excise relief can also step pump prices up or down independently of the underlying crude premium.
