How US fuel supply works
The United States is the world’s largest producer of both oil and natural gas and a net exporter of refined products, with deep domestic refining. Because of that, US strain usually shows up first in price and in the buffers — the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and distillate inventories — rather than in physical availability at the pump.
What to watch
Diesel (distillate) is the tell: it drives freight, farming and heating and is the tightest part of the barrel. Retail gasoline tracks the crude price plus refining and seasonal factors. The SPR level and weekly EIA inventory data are the clearest gauges of American balances.
